In the Post Gimme a List a Top 100 Tools for (e)Learning was mentioned.

Interesting, that the hits for good tools in practice are mainly free tools ;-) But not open source, as it seems commercial advertising is doing a good job in spreading information to customers.

And i found it again a bit strange that the tools are mixed up from different software backgrounds like webbrowser and social bookmarking instead of educational software or software aiming on educational processes. Maybe because they are not constructed the way people would like to use educational software. But it seems anyway that learning in this context is not an intended act but rather a fall-out (to describe it negative) or a intrinsic motivation to get the “cool things” working.

  1. some two pages / concepts i found which are about communication and coordination of people in the web are:

    http://www.schoolofeverything.com/

    http://www.meetup.com/

Both quite interesting for educational purposes as well, but also both are held by private companies with commercial interests (as every private company)

  2. What would be your most important software for education?

  3. Hi! All right. Lets meet tomorrow. The others didnt comment on my suggestions. Unfortunately I ve to leave a little early tomorrow… But lets talk about it tomorrow anyway.

  5. @ ralf „what would be your most important software for education“

    hmm,
    a good question.
I have to think about it for a while. Somehow first i would use very simple technology, where you have something working allready which you can manipulate to change the results and which is usable in daily life to have a motivation to learn about it. It should show the main concepts of software in general, e.g. an object orientated view, input-calculation-output and transparency how the computer is generating and working with the data you give it. maybe some kind of landscape how the transformations take place step by step. therefor it would be great to have a graphical software which shows also the „data-path/layers“ to really understand about why a graphic changes with pressing some buttons. i have in general the feeling there are too many myths about computers, as if it is technical too complex to understand how it works. see for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Processor

Just to have some generalisated idea of what is happening inside a computer. But this paradigm you have to implement in examples which are giving results, f.e. to change some graphics with a visualisation what steps are done to make this to happen.
If it is clear what is the difference between information and data and how to get a technical system to do what you want it to do, you might get an educational step forward in the use of all more deepgoing aspects of software.
Hmm, a topic to be continued
